Why it is prescribed (Indications) :
This medication is a benzodiazepine derivative, prescribed for short-term treatment of insomnia. It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow sleep.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): Contraindicated in patients with severe mental disorder, acute angle-closure glaucoma, severe liver disease, hypersensitivity and during pregnancy.
Pregnancy Category :
Category X : Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.
Dosage & When it is to be taken :
PO- The recommended usual adult dose is 15 mg before retiring, 7.5 mg may be sufficient for some patients, and others may need 30 mg.
How it should be taken :
It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, at bedtime.
